KUCHING, Oct 16: Betong voters have been urged to continue to make the Betong constituency an unassailable fortress of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

In making this call, Deputy Premier Dato Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, said the Opposition had tried in the past elections to conquer Betong, but their efforts had been rejected.

“When Betong is again under the GPS government, the people can look forward to a better future.

“We now have the Betong Division Development Agenda (BDDA) to chart out the division’s further progress and prosperity with the RM1.5 billion budget given,” said Uggah in a press statement today.

He said this before presenting grants totalling RM300,000 to the village security and development committees (JKKKs) and Women Bureaus from 94 longhouses in Bukit Saban constituency held at Rh Mendit Unsu longhouse in Penom yesterday (Oct 15).

The function was also attended by Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier Dr Richard Rapu, Betong District Officer Alfred Geling, and Temenggong Richard Mulok.

Meanwhile, Uggah reminded community leaders to report to their elected representatives any delay in implementing Rural Transformation Projects (RTPs) and Minor Rural Projects (MRPs).

Uggah explained when elected representatives provide grants for projects, it is expected for the projects to be completed on schedule.

He added that delays will defeat the government’s objective of providing infrastructure to benefit the people.

Given the coming northeast monsoon season, Uggah said community leaders should report to their elected representatives any damage done to their roads or bridges, including the occurrence of soil erosion.

“You can easily do this through your WhatsApp group where your wakil rakyat (elected representatives) are also members.

“Please send us pictures as well. We can then contact the relevant departments to do the repair works or take necessary action,” he said.
