KUCHING, March 14: A Bornean gibbon (Wak Wak/Empeliau) was handed over to Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) by a member of the public after being kept in captivity for five years.
According to SFC, the man found the animal five years ago in a semi-conscious state when it was still a juvenile, possibly after escaping from its mother.
“The man realised that keeping the animal was an offence under the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998 after coming across posters and brochures by SFC on protected and fully protected animals and plants.
“He then contacted SFC Bintulu to hand over the animal,” it said in a statement today.
SFC noted that the animal was temporarily placed in Taman Tumbina Bintulu while waiting for further instructions from SFC headquarters.
Anyone who has information on illegal wildlife activities has been urged to contact the SFC hotline at 019-8859996 (SFC Kuching), 019-8883561 (SFC Sibu), 019-8332737 (SFC Bintulu), 019-8290994 (SFC Miri). ― DayakDaily
