KUCHING, June 11: The RM285.5 million Batang Igan Bridge project is poised to significantly enhance connectivity and socioeconomic development in central Sarawak’s rural areas, particularly Kampung Igan and the Jemoreng constituency, with construction progress already slightly ahead of schedule at 82.81 per cent as of June 2025.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo expressed confidence that the bridge will serve as a vital link between rural and urban areas, unlocking greater economic and social opportunities for local communities.
“This project will not only speed up access between rural and urban areas but it will also boost economic activities of the surrounding communities.
“I hope this momentum can be sustained until the project is fully completed,” he said after a briefing session with the project’s contractor and engineers during a site visit in Igan yesterday (June 10).
Ukas reported that as of June 2025, the project has achieved 82.81 per cent physical progress, slightly ahead of the original schedule target of 82.79 per cent.
The Batang Igan Bridge is part of the Sarawak government’s strategy to close the development gap between urban and rural areas through comprehensive infrastructure development.
Once completed, it is expected to improve mobility for residents and act as a key enabler for growth in tourism, agriculture, and small businesses throughout the region.
Aidel also inspected key structures and held a dialogue session with technical officers during the visit to address emerging issues and ensure timely follow-up.
The project is on track for full completion by Dec 2025, subject to favourable weather and technical conditions. — DayakDaily
