KUCHING, July 8: Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) is embarking on a container vegetable gardening project in response to the challenging food predicament experienced by poor households which had seen their food security under threat from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its president Lina Soo said the pandemic which resulted in lockdowns all over the world had seen a vigorous revival of vegetable gardening at home.

Thus, Soo believes that container gardening is one way to alleviate the food security problem.

“Container vegetable gardening is trending again, and whether one lives in a flat, apartment or house, with a balcony, a small yard or driveway, anyone can successfully grow vegetables and herbs, even without a garden plot.

“Growing your own vegetables at home has seen a surge in popularity as it encompasses three huge benefits: saving money, eating clean and organic to boost health, and knowing exactly where your vegetable comes from,” she said in a statement.

Soo noted that container gardening encompasses growing plants in pots, planters, tubs, half barrels, an old boot, a used can, plastic bags or any other object which can hold some potting soil and a plant.

Soo listed the plants suitable for container gardening such as tomatoes, chilies, bell peppers, eggplants, ginger, spring onions, herbs and so forth.

For those who have yet to embark on home vegetable gardening, Soo suggested they start small with just one container until the beginner becomes accustomed to the level of care required to grow and harvest the vegetable.

She disclosed a container gardening enthusiasts’ group would be formed to exchange knowledge on gardening and health.

Soo added a container gardening competition is also being planned to showcase creative and inspiring ideas to promote homegrown vegetables.

To help those who are new to vegetable gardening, Soo said Aspirasi in Kuching will give away a container, a bag of soil and the starter plant which would be either cili padi, aloe vera or mulberry.

She disclosed that delivery of the items will only be done after the state of emergency is lifted

Those interested to participate may WhatsApp the party at 014-5950511 or 016-8888848 to register, as there is limited stock of the container gardening starter kit.

Aspirasi said booking is only accepted while stocks last. — DayakDaily
