KUCHING, Feb 13: Acquisition of MASwings and its transformation into Sarawak-owned airline, AirBorneo, is critical step in the development of the new Kuching International Airport by 2030.
Emphasising the necessity of a homegrown airline, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian stated that building a world-class airport without ensuring sufficient airline connectivity would be futile.
“We are not just acquiring an airline; we are securing Sarawak’s connectivity. We want visitors to see Sarawak as a prime destination, just like Kuala Lumpur,” he said during the Love Blooms event in conjunction with the Chap Goh Mei celebration at Malaysia-China Friendship Park last night (Feb 12).
He further highlighted that AirBorneo is integral to Sarawak’s broader nation-building agenda, not only boosting the tourism sector but also elevating Sarawak’s global profile through enhanced international accessibility.
The name AirBorneo, he explained, reflects a shared vision for regional leadership in aviation, strengthening ties with Sabah and Kalimantan, Indonesia.
“We are taking the lead because we refuse to be left behind. The name ‘Borneo’ symbolises our commitment to regional collaboration and leadership in the aviation sector,” he added.
Dr Sim urged Sarawakians to unite in advancing this strategic initiative, ensuring a stronger, more connected future for the region while fostering international partnerships. — DayakDaily
