KUCHING, June 23: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Affin Bank Berhad to spearhead efforts in bridging the financial divide between urban and rural communities by innovating accessible banking solutions.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by State Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar during the official opening of Affin Bank’s Jalan Satok branch at the Al-Idrus Commercial Centre here today, the Premier described financial inclusion as a “moral imperative” and a core component of Sarawak’s development agenda.
“One of the core tenets of our development agenda in Sarawak is inclusivity. We are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, especially those in our rural communities and segments of society that have historically been underserved by traditional financial institutions,” he said.
Abang Johari challenged Affin Bank to explore innovative strategies to close the urban-rural financial access gap, emphasising that inclusion goes beyond banking—it empowers communities to participate in the State’s growing prosperity.
“I challenge Affin to explore innovative ways to reach these underserved populations.
“This could mean leveraging digital banking solutions, offering micro-financing options, or establishing community outreach programmes that educate and empower individuals and small businesses who may lack access to conventional banking services,” he added.
He said such efforts would allow more Sarawakians to become active participants in the economy while reducing inequality and fostering shared growth.
“By extending financial literacy and access to basic banking facilities, Affin can become a beacon of hope, enabling more Sarawakians to participate fully in our economic prosperity,” he stressed.
Abang Johari said Sarawak welcomes financial institutions that share the State government’s values of inclusive growth, digital empowerment, and local economic transformation.
The opening of Affin Bank’s Satok branch, he added, signifies the bank’s growing footprint in Sarawak and commitment to serving the diverse needs of the local population.
Meanwhile, Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Affin Group, said during his speech that the new Jalan Satok branch marks a significant step forward in their commitment to serving the vibrant communities of Sarawak and supporting the State’s dynamic economy through innovative solutions, customer-focused services, and inclusive banking experiences.
“Jalan Satok is more than just a street — it is the heartbeat of Kuching. Rich in culture, commerce, and community, this area embodies the essence of Sarawak’s heritage and progress.
“That is why we chose Jalan Satok: a strategic location that reflects the vibrancy, diversity, and aspirations of the people we serve,” he said.
As per a press handout, the Affin Bank Jalan Satok Branch is the Bank’s ninth branch in Sarawak and its 137th nationwide.
“With nine existing branches across key Sarawak cities including Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri, Affin is set to open five additional branches at strategic locations throughout the State,” the handout read. — DayakDaily
