Active clusters account for half of 472 new Covid-19 cases reported in Sarawak

KUCHING, July 13: Nearly half of the 472 new Covid-19 cases recorded in Sarawak today stemmed from existing active clusters with Miri Central Prison accounting for the highest number at 169 cases while Sri Aman Immigration Detention Centre had three.

Sarawak also recorded two Covid-19 fatalities in Sibu Hospital.

With this, the State’s tally of positive cases has swelled to 69,576 and death toll to 435.


The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, reported that two districts namely Miri and Kuching recorded the highest number of daily infections with 178 and 138 cases respectively.

Nineteen districts also recorded an increase in cases namely Tebedu (50), Samarahan (19), Serian (17), Bau (14), Sibu, Sarikei and Kapit (9 each), Mukah (8), Song (4), Sri Aman and Meradong (3 each), Bintulu, Lundu and Selangau (2 each), while Asajaya, Subis, Telang Usan, Tatau and Sebauh has one case each.

Of the 472 cases today, 232 cases comprised individuals from active clusters while 193 cases were close contacts to positive cases.

A total of 38 cases were symptomatic while 18 cases were detected from other screenings and there was also an imported case involving a returnee from Kuala Lumpur.

As for the two fatalities, SDMC revealed that one of the victims was a 58-year-old woman from Sibu who was comorbid with hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and heart disease.

The second deceased was a 57-year-old man from Kanowit who was comorbid with chronic kidney disease and gout.

Sarawak also recorded 1,026 recoveries today, thus increasing the total number of recovered patients in Sarawak to 60,573 or 87.06 per cent of total positive cases so far.

However, there are still 8,408 active cases being isolated and receiving treatments in hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRC) throughout Sarawak. — DayakDaily
