KUCHING, Feb 16: Some 400 delegates including 150 international carbon traders are coming to Kuching for the Asia Carbon Conference (ACC) 2023, the first industry leadership conference for carbon offsetting and trading in Asia, which is set to take place on March 15-16 at Pullman Hotel.

Organised by London-based Argus Media in collaboration with the Sarawak government with host sponsor Samling Group and supported by Business Events Sarawak and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), discussions on the importance of carbon initiatives in managing climate change will be at the forefront of the Conference.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the Conference and deliver the opening keynote address on ‘Going Net Zero by 2050’.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said that the Conference will provide a new platform for discussions and exchanges on the carbon markets in Asia, focusing on Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and at the same time highlighting the potential of CCUS in Sarawak.

“The conference will cover the latest developments in policy, regulation, and market trends in our region, providing a forum for market participants, including emitters, traders, brokers, investors, and service providers, to network and discuss business opportunities.

“What will be useful to look forward to are the insights from leading experts on the future direction of the Asian carbon markets and the impact on the global carbon market, and I am hoping that the ideas and best practices shared at ACC 2023 may be adapted for Sarawak too,” he said in a press conference to announce the ACC 2023 at a hotel here today.

Noting that the effects of climate change has been accelerated due to activities of humankinds, especially through the years of industrialisation and the use of fossil fuel and coal which emitted a lot of carbon into the environment, Dr Hazland said Sarawak too needs to be part of the climate change mitigation efforts.

“Sarawak has a huge land mass where 62 per cent are forest holding a lot of carbon stock in our forest, mangroove, peat, apart from our rivers, rains and sunshine.

“It would be unwise for Sarawak to not take part in climate change mitigation. Not only can we reduce the effects of carbon emission but we can monetise or create new revenue and economy from the climate change mitigation strategies such as carbon trading and storage, renewable energy like hydro, solar, hydrogen and so on,” he pointed out.

In line with Sarawak’s goal of moving towards a green economy, Dr Hazland said that it is vital for Sarawak to stay up-to-date with the latest developments and to connect with industry peers and thought leaders in the industry.

The Conference will feature global subject matter experts from Malaysia, UK, USA, Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and more, who will share insights on the regulatory framework on carbon markets as well as the future of the Asia Pacific carbon market.
