2 suffer breathing difficulties following chemical storage fire at Kuching hotel

KUCHING, July 17: Two people were treated for shortness of breath after a fire broke out in a chemical storage room at a hotel here today.

In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 5.34pm, and firefighters from the Padungan station were deployed.

It was noted that the fire involved a storage room used for keeping chemical substances. Firefighting operations were carried out using one first-aid hose line to contain and extinguish the fire, with the hazardous materials (Hazmat) team from the Tabuan Jaya station deployed to assist.

It was confirmed that the chemical involved was a calcium hypochlorite hydrated mixture that contains chlorine, which is commonly used to treat water.

The incident involved two victims who experienced shortness of breath. Both were reported to be in stable condition and were treated by medical personnel from the Ministry of Health at the scene.

Monitoring and risk assessment activities are still ongoing at the incident site. — DayakDaily
