YMCA to breathe new life into 14-acre nature camp after 2-year inactivity due to pandemic

SIBU, July 20: The local YMCA is looking into revamping its nature camp, located 33km from the town centre, after almost two years of inactivity due to the pandemic.

Its president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming said other than the slight physical makeover, he also reached out to local creative industry, events management and tour operators in hopes to bring the crowd back.

He felt that the 14-acre camp, set amidst lush natural surroundings was a gold mine waiting to be rediscovered by the people.

“YMCA Camp, opened more than 25 years ago, was for many years, the go-to place for many people, looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban living.

“Families held barbecues and other activities with their loved ones, while students and members of various organisations came for camping or team building activities,” he said.

Reintroducing the camp to the public, Lau said it offers four types of accommodations namely the dormitories, hotel-styled rooms, chalets, and camping grounds.

Stating that the nature camp was too good a place to waste, he hoped the local community, non-governmental organisations, clubs and associations would come together again, and give the nature camp a much-needed boost.

“I certainly look forward to hearing from all of my young and creative friends when we meet again in mid-August to see what they have come up with for the camp’s re-energising project,” he said in a statement today.

In a related development, Lau said the camp will be hosting a hash run on July 30 as part of YMCA’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

YMCA is working with the Borneo Eco Hash Run group in organising this run event.
