KUCHING, July 20: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, has announced a collaboration between the Sarawak Heart Foundation and Swinburne University of Technology to host the ‘1st Sarawak Combat Against Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Cartoon and Doodle Art Competition 2022’ in conjunction with World Heart Day (WHD) 2022.

Apart from identifying local talent in cartoon and doodle art, he says the competition aims to raise youth awareness of healthy heart living.

“We want these competitions to make young people aware that heart disease begins at a young age.

“Also, what makes this competition unique is the opportunity to use digital technology and doodle art to raise CVD awareness among Sarawakian students, who can compete in three categories: primary students, secondary students, and university/college students,” he said today at the press conference for the ‘World Heart Day 2022’ and ‘1st Sarawak Combat Against Cardiovascular Disease Cartoon and Doodle Competition’ held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here.

Each category offers cash prizes and certificates to the first three winners, as well as 10 consolation prizes, for a total of RM12,000 in cash prizes to be won.

The deadline for submitting entries is Sept 9.

The winning artworks will be on display at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) lobby on Sept 25 and at the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on Oct 1, where various activities, such as free health screening and free self-breast examination, will be held to mark the end of the WHD celebration.

Furthermore, Dr Sim, who is also the deputy chairman of the Sarawak Heart Foundation, requested public support for the foundation’s efforts to promote a heart-healthy community in Sarawak.

The foundation’s core activities include providing financial assistance to poor heart patients in Sarawak for heart treatment in Malaysia and raising awareness of heart health through public health exhibitions, health talks, and free health screenings.

Apart from sponsoring medical equipment for the recovery and rehabilitation of heart patients in Sarawak’s public hospitals, the foundation also provides grants and sponsorships to hospitals, institutions of higher learning, and medical professionals to enable them to conduct research on heart-related diseases. — DayakDaily
