SIBU, May 7: A 31-year-old woman has been admitted to Sibu Hospital after she allegedly took a bottle of pesticide in an attempt to kill herself.

Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the police were now investigating the case under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide

He said at about 5.15pm on May 4, the police were informed by the hospital authority of a woman from Jalan Oya here who was being treated for drinking pesticide.

ACP Stanley said a police investigating team who went to the hospital were told by an uncle that at 2pm on May 4, he found the woman groaning in pain after drinking a bottle of pesticide.

The case happened at the uncle’s residence in Selangau.

“According to the uncle, the woman and her adopted 12-year-old daughter had arrived at his longhouse on May 3 and stayed overnight. However, on the next day at 2pm he was shocked to discover her in excruciating pain.

“He believed that she had drunk a bottle of pesticide which was kept in his kitchen,” he said.

The uncle subsequently rushed her to Sibu Hospital for treatment.

“Initial investigation revealed that the woman was under emotional stress after her mother refused to accept her into the family home. Her mother had also refused to recognise her as her daughter,” he added.

He said the woman was married three times but each time had ended in divorce.—DayakDaily
