KUCHING, May 31: The federal government has extended the Wage Subsidy Programme under the Social Security Organisation (Sosco) for all economic sectors affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) for a month.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the initiative which costs the government  RM1.5 billion is one of the measures under the RM40-billion Pemerkasa Plus economic assistance package.

“The extension of Wage Subsidy Programme with a limit of 500 employees per application will be borne by the government.

“This is expected to benefit 2.5 million employees and more than 200,000 employers.

“Besides, employers registered with Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad will be given a levy payment exemption for one month until June 2021,” he said during a live telecast when announcing Pemerkasa Plus economic assistance package tonight.

Muhyiddin said the implementation of MCO 3.0 will have a big impact on a large number of people who are facing the risk of retrenchment, lower income and the closure of many businesses.

Earlier on March 18, Muhyiddin said the federal government has allocated RM700 million to extend the Wage Subsidy Programme 3.0 for three months, targeting tourism, wholesale and retail sectors under the Pemerkasa economic assistance package. — DayakDaily
