SELANGOR, Sept 8: Two bowls of kolo mee provided special ‘fuel’ for Sarawak para powerlifting ace Bryan Junency Gustin, who lifted 165kg to win gold for the Sarawak contingent at the 22nd Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma) Selangor 2026.
Adding to the occasion, Bryan’s achievement at the Selangor International Trade Centre (SITC) came alongside that of his younger brother, Brownson John Gustin, who also took the podium after winning bronze in the men’s up-to-88kg category.
Bryan emerged champion with a best lift of 165kg, while Brownson recorded 110kg for bronze. Perak’s Chee Der Min took silver with a lift of 120kg.
However, Bryan’s gold medal story caught attention when he revealed he had managed to eat two bowls of kolo mee before competing, drawing laughter during a post-event media interview here today.
“Yes, two bowls,” he joked when asked by the media about his success after the medal presentation ceremony, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
When asked whether the popular Sarawak noodle dish was the ‘secret’ behind his strength, Bryan laughed before insisting that there was no particular secret to his success.
“No secret, just training,” he said.
In reality, consistent training alongside his younger brother was one of the key ingredients behind the siblings’ success, as they not only share a family bond but also a passion for powerlifting.
Bryan, the eldest in the family, said Brownson was his third younger brother, and that training together had helped them motivate each other and improve their performances.
Interestingly, he also revealed that powerlifting had become deeply rooted in their family, making the siblings’ achievements at Para Sukma a product of the support and sporting culture they had built together.
After helping Sarawak secure gold, Bryan is not resting on his laurels, as he is now eyeing an opportunity to represent the country at the SEA Games, with a target of winning gold.
The athlete also holds a personal best (PB) of 201kg and hopes to improve on the mark in his next competition.
“Maybe the SEA Games. The target could be gold, and I want to break my 201kg PB again,” he said.
Concluding the interview on a spirited note, Bryan shouted Sarawak’s iconic rallying cry, reflecting his determination to continue pushing his limits.
“Agi Hidup, Agi Ngelaban!” he said with a laugh, before adding another joke: “Hashtag kolo mee.” — DayakDaily
