Uggah proposes certain hospitals be upgraded for Covid-19 cases

KUCHING, Nov 10: The Sarawak government proposed to upgrade its district hospitals in Bau, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Kapit and Limbang as Covid-19 treatment centres.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the proposal had been submitted to the National Security Council (MKN) for Federal government’s consideration.


Currently, Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Sibu Hospital, Bintulu Hospital Bintulu and Miri Hospital are the treatment centres for Covid-19 patients.

Replying to Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazlan Abang Hipni supplementary questions at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly today, Uggah said, “The Molecular Medicine Laboratory for rt-PCR test was built in SGH and extended to Sibu Hospital, Bintulu Hospital, Miri Hospital and Sarawak Heart Center (SHC).

“These laboratories have the capacity to conduct up to 1,000 test per day in SGH, followed by SHC (500), Miri Hospital (400) Sibu Hospital (300) and Bintulu Hospital (200).

“The on-going construction of a new Medical Molecular Laboratory in Limbang Hospital which is funded by Sarawak government can take up to 200 tests once complete.

As for private medical facility, Uggah said Borneo Medical Center (BMC) have its own medical laboratories which are available to conduct Covid-19 test and it is recognised by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
