KUCHING, March 8: Two individuals were arrested by the police in Serian for allegedly attempting to traffic 14,880 Ecstasy pills worth RM267,940 across the Sarawak-Indonesia border on Friday (March 5).

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Aidi Ismail said the two individuals, a 35-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, were arrested after police stopped a vehicle driven by the male suspect at an Op Benteng roadblock at KM30 of the Serian-Tebedu road at about 5am.

“Upon inspection, police found a total of 14,880 Ecstasy pills (worth RM267,840) inside a backpack that was in the vehicle, and also 0.37 grammes of syabu (worth RM100) on the female passenger.

“Total value of seized drugs is RM267,940, worth RM1,041,600 in the Indonesian market, and which can cater for an estimated 49,600 drug users,” he said in a press conference at the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) in Jalan Badruddin here, today.

Aidi added the two suspects were later brought to the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID)’s office at the Serian District Police headquarters (IPD Serian). An initial urine test revealed that both suspects were positive for methamphetamine.

According to Aidi, police believed that the drugs came from Kuching and were intended to be brought to Tebedu for the Indonesian market.

“After further investigation, both suspects admitted they were paid RM3,000 to deliver the drugs across the border and were doing it due to life difficulties.

“All the drugs were seized as case items and both suspects were remanded for seven days starting March 5 until March 12, 2021.

“The case is still being investigated under Section 39B, Section 12 (2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he added. — DayakDaily
