KUCHING, March 10: Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP), Datuk Snowdan Lawan, has emphasised the importance of safeguarding ‘kuntau’ as a significant part of Sarawak’s cultural heritage.

According to a press release, he stated that the traditional martial art should be practiced for self-defense, sport, and maintaining an active lifestyle—rather than as a tool for violence or revenge.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of kuntau classes organised by the Sarawak Iban Kuntau Association (Sikar) at Dewan Siol Kandis here, Snowdan stressed the need to pass down this martial art to the younger generation with pride.

“The practice of kuntau should be used as an art for self-defense, sports, and an active lifestyle, but not to injure, put up a fight, or seek revenge.

“It should be safeguarded and disseminated to our younger generation as one of our heritage, and we take pride in it,” he said.

The event saw the participation of 44 individuals, aged between nine and 47, who demonstrated their skills in tactical routines known as Spring 12 and Spring 24.

Spectators were also treated to a ‘ngajat’ cultural performance and kuntau displays, both in team formations and individual performances, showcasing fast defense tactics and strategic movements.

During his speech, Snowdan also highlighted the funding opportunities available through the ministry, such as the Facilitation Fund and Event Grant, which can be applied for online.

Additionally, he approved a minor rural project (MRP) allocation to support Sikar’s activities.

Also in attendance at the event were Sikar president Basil Laman, Kampung Siol Kandis village headman Ganie Ujai, Kuntau instructor and master Sunjie, Academy of Sarawak Dayak Iban (Asadia) representatives, and representatives from other divisional kuntau associations. — DayakDaily
