KUCHING, Nov 12: Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan says approximately RM4 million will be allocated to upgrade infrastructure at Wong Jaban waterfall.

According to Snowdan, the infrastructure upgrades will provide locals with opportunities to engage in economic activities, such as selling products.

He said the funding will be under Sri Aman Development Agency (Sada) which has been allocated RM1.5 billion.

“The waterfalls like Wong Jaban, Wong Radak, and Wong Telangin are new. Some people learn about the waterfalls from their friends who are staying there, and then they go glamping there.

“From there, they promoted it on Facebook and other social media, and it has now gone viral. I am also going there,” he said when officiating at the ‘Magnificent Sarawak: An Unforgettable Trip’ writing competition prize-giving high tea held at Imperial Hotel here today.

He also stated that the locals intend to charge visitors to the waterfalls an entrance fee.

Snowdan further emphasised the importance of responsible tourism, urging visitors to keep the location clean and not damage the environment.

“Don’t destroy (the place). You can go there and enjoy yourself, but make sure that you must take care of the place. Don’t destroy the place, don’t litter the place, things like that,” he added.

Among those who were present at the event were Arts, Culture, and Heritage principal assistant secretary Dr Elena Chai who represented MTCP permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini; Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) communication director Margaret Apau who represented STB acting chief executive officer Yusfida Khalid; Imperial Hotel Kuching sales and marketing director Irene Tan; and DayakDaily chief editor Lian Cheng. — DayakDaily
