SIBU, Oct 18: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing has called on the media in Sarawak to help the ministry promote the country’s tourism industry.

“As Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, I also call on the media to work with us to highlight and promote Malaysian tourism as a global brand, especially the unique cultural and natural attractions that Sarawak can offer,” he said.

In his remark at Sibu at the Sibu Journalists Association (SJA) 30th-anniversary celebration last night, Tiong also urged journalists to report factually and with high integrity.

“In an era dominated by uncertainties of the media, you bear even greater responsibilities. I understand the pressing time constraints you are facing when reporting news.

“However, I appeal to you to always maintain your professional ethics, objectivity, and fairness and to provide the public with truthful and reliable information,” he said in his text of speech, which was read by his press secretary, Ross Sia.

He also prayed that media workers would always adhere to their original ethos and experience in fact-checking, rather than getting swept up in the vicious competition of “scoops” and “clicks.”

“The rise of fake news and disinformation threatens the very foundations of journalism, while technology continues to reshape how we consume and share news.

“I am confident that the Sibu Journalists Association will continue to adapt, innovate, and uphold the highest ethical standards and always make conscious efforts to battle fake news,” he stressed.
