Timber, transport, construction and trade sectors account for majority of Bintulu’s Covid-19 cases on Aug 11-12

KUCHING, Aug 13: Most of the 34 Covid-19 cases in Bintulu on Aug 11 originate from the timber, transport, construction and trade sectors, says Bintulu MP Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.

He said some of the cases were detected from workers’ dormitories in the timber sector and as of Aug 12, there was a total of 31 such confirmed cases.

Thus, he asserted that companies in Bintulu need to implement strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) and make sure of their compliance among the employees, otherwise there will be another pandemic surge.

He said all the efforts previously to reduce three-digit daily caseloads to single-digit would be in vain if measures to halt the virus spread are not applied.

“As the pandemic rages again, we still have businesses that are unconcerned and indifferent to the pandemic, which is expected to lead to Bintulu recording a three-digit number of cases in the near future.

“Once the government tightens the SOPs, it will be the business sector that will suffer,” he said in a social media post today.

Tiong, who is also the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, said if the high case numbers continue, SOP might be further tightened where the 14-day quarantine period is extended to 21 days.

As for Bintulu, he said the authorities are still discussing the preventive measures for swab test procedures in response to the rebound in local cases.

“The main point to consider is always the safety and health of the people in Bintulu,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
