SIBU, Aug 11: Three local men were arrested for their alleged involvement in a 19-second video showing a man being assaulted by a group of other men that went viral on Facebook.
In a statement, Sibu district police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a report was received on Aug 9 from a 23-year-old local man in connection with the incident.
Following the report, police investigated and traced the individuals involved, resulting in the arrest of the three suspects at separate locations around Sibu.
All three suspects—aged between 21 and 60—were arrested to assist in further investigations and will be brought before the Sibu Court today for an application for a remand order.
“The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by means of a weapon or other dangerous means, which carries a punishment of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and may also include a fine or whipping, upon conviction.
“The case is also being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting while armed with a weapon or anything which, when used as a weapon, is likely to cause death, which carries a punishment of up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine or both, upon conviction,” he said.
He also reminded members of the public not to speculate or reshare the video of the incident, as doing so could affect the investigation.
Members of the public with any information related to the incident are urged to channel the information to the police to assist with the investigation. — DayakDaily
