KUCHING, Aug 11: AirBorneo has joined the government-backed FLYsiswa air travel subsidy programme, enabling eligible students to redeem a RM400 digital travel voucher for domestic flights between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan through the airline beginning Aug 11.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport (MOT), is aimed at easing travel costs for higher education students studying away from home. The subsidy is available to eligible students enrolled in public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, matriculation colleges and teacher education institutes (IPG).

In a statement today, AirBorneo said its participation in the programme would help bridge geographic barriers and reduce the financial burden faced by students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo.

The airline said its expanding network and flight frequencies would provide students with more affordable options to return home during semester breaks, festive periods and emergencies.

AirBorneo chief executive officer Megat Ardian Aminuddin said air travel costs should not stand in the way of students maintaining close ties with their families while pursuing their studies.

“Education requires focus, dedication and peace of mind. For many young Malaysians studying away from home, particularly between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, the cost of flight tickets should never be an obstacle to spending quality time with family.

“Our participation in FLYsiswa reflects our deeply rooted obligation to community welfare. We look forward to welcoming thousands of students on board our flights, ensuring they enjoy seamless, reliable and affordable travel home,” he said.

Megat said the airline hoped the initiative would significantly ease the financial burden on students and their families, allowing them to focus on their academic pursuits while remaining connected to home.

Eligible students can verify their status through the Ministry of Transport’s subsidy portal (subsidiudara.mot.gov.my) and redeem the RM400 digital voucher when booking flights via AirBorneo’s official website and mobile application.

AirBorneo said voucher redemption for its flights will be available from Aug 11 to Nov 30, 2026, with travel valid until Dec 31, 2026.

To further support student travellers, the airline is offering additional benefits for FLYsiswa bookings, including enhanced baggage allowances, flexible booking options with complimentary or discounted date changes, and access to its network of destinations across Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
