KUCHING, Oct 23: A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 13 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to threatening to kill his wife and causing her hurt, reportedly because she did not ‘salam’ him before leaving for work.
He admitted to both charges before Magistrate Nuriena Syafika Mohd Najib.
The first charge, under Section 506 of the Penal Code, accused him of criminal intimidation by threatening to kill his 23-year-old wife while pointing a knife at her. The second, under Section 323, related to voluntarily causing hurt by punching her and striking her face.
The offences took place at a rented room in Bandar Baru Samariang at about 12.30pm on Oct 5.
The court imposed 10 months’ jail for the first charge and three months for the second, ordering the sentences to run consecutively.
The court heard that the couple were married. On the day of the incident, the accused asked his wife where she was going, and she told him she was heading to work.
He was said to have become angry when she did not ‘salam’ him and hurled an electric kettle and a plastic drink bottle at her. He then punched her and drove his knee into her face, before brandishing a knife and threatening to kill her.
Fearing for her safety, the victim lodged a police report. Police arrested him on Oct 19.
