KUCHING, April 11: A German travel YouTuber who goes by ‘Ken Abroad’ (@KenAbroad on YouTube) has described how the different ethnicities in Sarawak and Sabah can mingle together as one of the main differences between the two Borneo regions and Peninsular Malaysia.

In a video posted by a Facebook group called ‘The Kuchingite’ on April 7, Ken was seen answering a question by a netizen on the matter.

“I have been to Sarawak and Sabah in East Malaysia, and it is a bit different as it feels almost like a different country.

“Overall, it is still Malaysia as the people speak the same language and the same menu (food) is served in the restaurant, but there are a few differences that you can notice.

“One thing I noticed is how the different ethnicities seem to mingle more over there (Sarawak and Sabah),” he said.

Ken listed an example whereby he was in a Chinese restaurant, and there were Chinese people drinking beer at one table, and nearby there would be a table with a Malay family.

He also noted instances where he had seen Muslims working in Chinese restaurants.

“I never see that in Peninsular Malaysia. Maybe that’s just my personal experience but based on my impression, ethnicities here mingle more together,” he said.

Another difference Ken noticed is the demographics in Sarawak and Sabah, whereby there are more churches than mosques, and different religions could co-exist.

“If you come to Malaysia and want to see something different, travel to Borneo,” he said.

As of today, Ken has over 196,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, with over 300 videos documenting his travels and experiences as he attempts to visit every country in Southeast Asia. — DayakDaily
