KUCHING, April 30: The border town of Tebedu is poised for a significant improvement with the development of a new township and immigration complex, complemented by Serian District Council’s (SDC) strategic focus on agricultural and tourism growth.

According to SDC’s chairman Dato Peter Minos, the new infrastructural developments will not only boost population growth, but they could also pave the way for more small businesses to emerge and thrive.

“With the coming new township and a new immigration complex at the border, Tebedu will see improvement and betterment all round,” he said.

However, not all developments in Tebedu have seen smooth sailing. The once-thriving Inland Port has faced substantial setbacks due to policy changes in the neighbouring country. During its peak in 1980s, the port handled over 200 containers daily, but now sees very little activity.

“It can be revived but there are huge challenges, but we will try,” said Inland Port managing director Nobel Pang.

To overcome the current situation there, Pang is considering pivoting to commercial agriculture, a shift that is welcomed by SDC, which is actively promoting agriculture and tourism across Serian.

“That is of interest to us in SDC which is trying to promote agriculture in Serian, and of course tourism.

“Hopefully, the private sector will go more into agriculture and tourism in Serian as these will create (more) income for the people,” Minos said. – DayakDaily
