KUCHING, April 30: Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has stressed that there must be no place for any form of oppression or injustice in the workforce, calling on all stakeholders—government, employers, workers, and society—to unite in creating a safe, healthy, fair, and prosperous working environment, as a developed and thriving nation is built upon the strength and dedication of its workers.

Delivering his Labour Day 2025 message alongside his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Wan Junaidi emphasised that May 1 is not just a public holiday, but a symbol of appreciation for the workers’ relentless struggles and contributions to nation-building.

“Behind every success lies the tireless effort of the workforce, whether in the public or private sector, in cities or in rural areas. Productivity and shared well-being can only be achieved in a harmonious workplace,” he said.

He highlighted this year’s Labour Day theme, “Pekerja Kesuma Bangsa” (Workers, the Nation’s Treasure), which recognises workers as invaluable assets who bolster national identity and progress.

He noted that the theme also aligns with the rebranding of the Ministry of Human Resources to KESUMA, with a renewed emphasis on human values, well-being, and harmony in the workplace.

Wan Junaidi also lauded the role of Sarawak’s diverse employment sectors, from oil and gas to agriculture, tourism, and the digital economy, noting that every worker, regardless of location or industry, contributes to the State’s development agenda.

“My wife and I express our sincere appreciation to employers and trade unions who continue to work hand-in-hand to safeguard workers’ welfare. Harmonious relations between employers and employees form the backbone of sustainable productivity,” he said.

He further urged all sectors to uphold a culture of mutual respect and fairness at every level—from top management to frontliners—while ensuring working environments remain conducive and inclusive for all.

The Governor also stressed the importance of revisiting employment policies and practices in line with the Sarawak government’s commitment to enhancing social protection, widening skill training opportunities, and offering fair and inclusive jobs.

He reminded Malaysians of Labour Day’s roots in the global labour movement, which emerged from the industrial struggles in the 18th century and laid the foundation for today’s worker rights, including the eight-hour workday.

“Let us all work together to make Sarawak a fair, safe, and prosperous workplace for everyone, and to realise our vision of becoming a developed and prosperous region by 2030,” he concluded.

Wan Junaidi and his wife Fauziah also extended their warmest wishes to all workers in Sarawak and Malaysia on this special occasion. — DayakDaily
