Tebedu immigration officer remanded five days over alleged gratification to let foreigners enter

KUCHING, Feb 14: The Magistrate’s Court here remanded an immigration officer for five days for allegedly receiving gratification of RM1,800.

The 42-year-old suspect was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on February 13.


He was brought before the Magistrate’s Court here today for a remand hearing.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali granted the MACC’s application to remand the suspect for five days, until Feb 19 to assist in the investigation.

The suspect allegedly received RM1,800 as gratification from an agent for two Indonesian individuals to obtain visas to enter Malaysia without going through proper procedures laid out by the Immigration Department.

Thw Sarawak Immigration Department’s Integrity Unit had conducted an inspection at the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) station in Tebedu, at about 10.15am on February 13 where the team found suspicious WhatsApp messages which contained details of two suspicious transactions.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009.

Investigating Officer Masrawi Saimi applied for the remand while the suspect was unrepresented by counsel. ā€” DayakDaily
