SIBU, Nov 7: A male teacher became poorer by RM9,000 after he was cheated a scammer who had disguised himself as one of his friends.

Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the station received a police report regarding the fraud case on Wednesday.

He said the teacher received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number but used a profile picture of a woman known to the complainant.

“The complainant was asked to help make a transaction into a bank account in the name of a person of RM6,250 for the purpose of helping a relative who is in trouble,” he said.

He added that the complainant was also asked to make payment into another bank account for the same purpose.

“Strangely enough, the complainant did so through online transactions without even checking whether the money was for his friend,” he said.

“However, the complainant realised that he had been duped when a friend informed him that his (complainant’s) picture was also used for cheating.

“The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” he said. – DayakDaily
