KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has requested the Education Service Commission (SPP) to appoint 317 reserve teacher candidates to fill various teaching vacancies nationwide.
Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the request, made last month, involves a portion of the 880 remaining reserve teacher candidates who are still awaiting offers.
He noted that as of September 30, of the 4,417 reserve teacher candidates from the 2025 intake, 3,537 had been offered appointments, including 114 candidates from Sarawak.
“To fill teaching vacancies, including those in Sarawak, the SPP is currently conducting interviews for the 2026 teacher recruitment drive via the open market; this process began in May 2026 and is expected to conclude in November 2026,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He responded to a question from Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS-Igan) about the number of reserve teacher candidates from Sarawak, vacancy statistics by specialisation, and plans to absorb them into the service.
Wong said the placement of new teachers and graduates from the Teacher Education Institutes (IPG) on September 30 raised Sarawak’s overall teacher fill rate to 98.84 per cent, with 98.61 per cent in secondary schools and 98.98 per cent in primary schools.
He said Sarawak has so far recorded 500 teacher vacancies, including 224 in secondary schools and 276 in primary schools.
He said secondary school vacancies include subject specialisations such as Design and Technology (RBT) and Science, while primary schools show higher vacancy figures for specialisations in Mathematics, Music, and Guidance and Counselling. — Bernama
