Taking up three out of six cases in Sarawak, rabies still rampant in Kuching

KUCHING, March 7: Sarawak has registered six positive rabies cases in the week between March 2 to 8, 2024.

According to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, one case involving a free-roaming pet was identified in Sebauh, Bintulu, at Jalan Sebauh.


There was also a similar case involving a free-roaming pet identified at Kampung Kemintin Klauh of Sri Aman.

The rest of the cases were all located in Kuching, apart from the third case, which also involved a free-roaming pet in Jalan Jiu Phin, Tondong of Bau.

In Kuching, there was a case involving a free-roaming pet at Kampung Sijijak of Batu Kawa and one case each at Jalan Simen Raya 1, Pending and an area under Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), all involving strays.

In his 206th ShallWee Talk social media livestream today, Wee continued to call pet owners to vaccinate their pets to prevent the spread of the disease.

On MBKSā€™ Mass Anti-rabies Vaccination, Licensing, Microchipping & Neutering programme held at Mayor Song Swee Guan Park, Kuching, on March 2, 2024, Wee said the programme received positive responses.

A total of 638 dogs were vaccinated; 333 received their first anti-rabies dosage, while the rest received booster doses.

As many as 289 dog owners brought their dogs for microchipping, while 474 took the opportunity to apply for licences for their pets.

Meanwhile, under the programme, 37 pet owners applied for neutering for their pets, where they were required only to pay RM75 instead of RM220 following subsidies from MBKS. ā€” DayakDaily
