KUCHING, March 9: Deputy Premier Dato Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has revealed plans to develop the Tanjung Sebekut area in Spaoh into another vital agricultural hub in Sarawak, focusing on rice production.

Uggah, also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, disclosed that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has given his approval for the development initiative.

“Farmers will be planting hybrid paddy which will allow two harvests per year,” he said in a statement today.

Uggah, who is Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) chairman, said that together with Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu, they will turn Bukit Saban constituency into another leading food producing area in the State.

He added that they would provide the planting materials and breeding stocks, including the latest technology.

According to him, an allocation of RM200 million from BDDA will also be used for the purpose.

“The fund is to help develop suitable agricultural programmes and other income generating activities.

“To train and create modern farmers, we have the Bebuling Agropark which is being worked out besides the collecting, processing and packaging centre near the Bebuling STOLport, which is being constructed,” he added. — DayakDaily
