KUALA LUMPUR, June 27: It is possible for renewable energy resources to be shared among the Asean region if it is properly connected through undersea cables, says Deputy Sarawak Secretary Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
He said Sarawak has started exploring renewable energy since 1996 when it first built the biggest hydroelectric dam in the State – Bakun Dam.
Then came the Asean Power Grid which is Asean’s vision to integrate the national power systems of its 10 member states to enable power trade.
“Sarawak is currently supplying power to Indonesia and then we are potentially looking forward to supplying renewable energy to Singapore.
“Then, probably to Peninsular Malaysia here all the way to Thailand. If you (Thailand) want some of our renewable energy, we (Sarawak) can supply to you.
“Anyway, this is the idea of renewable energy that can unite the region which would makes us stronger partners,” he said when speaking at a parallel session titled ‘Asia’s Opportunity: Building New Alliances’ in conjunction with the Energy Asia 2023 conference held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here yesterday (June 26).
Other speakers in the session were special advisor to the Cabinet of Japan Government-cum-board chairman of Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Tadashi Maeda; SCG president and chief executive officer Roongrote Rangsiyopash; and Xcoal Energy and Resources founder and chief executive officer Ernie L. Thrasher. – DayakDaily
