SPAOH, Dec 29: The persistent seasonal flooding problem in Spaoh town and its waterfront areas has been effectively resolved with the completion of three tidal control gates along the Spaoh River.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah expressed satisfaction with the project, stating that it seems to be effectively preventing floodwaters from entering the area.

“Previously, heavy rain and the overflow of the Spaoh River caused frequent flooding here.

“Now, we’re also assessing other enhancement projects, including a walkway and a gazebo,” he said during a visit to the waterfront yesterday (Dec 28).

Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), Bukit Saban assemblyman and Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) chairman, further mentioned that the RM500,000 project was completed well ahead of its original May 2025 deadline.

Earlier in the day, Uggah, accompanied by Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, officiated at the opening of the RM1 million BDDA-funded concrete pedestrian bridge at the Samu longhouse. The 90-meter-long bridge was also completed ahead of schedule.

The duo later inspected the 1.4-kilometer Ulu Penom-Ulu Bayor-Ulu Paku Road, a Rural Transformation Project (RTP) costing RM450,000, which is similarly ahead of its April 2025 deadline.

“We aim to review the implementation status of all RTPs, Minor Rural Projects, and other initiatives in the Bukit Saban constituency during a briefing early next year. Discussions and planning for the 2025 RTPs are already underway.

“Our service center will support implementing agencies with Bill of Quantities (BQ) preparations and cost assessments by March. This ensures all 2025 projects are implemented and completed on time, avoiding delays or abandoned works. Monitoring will continue to ensure progress,” Uggah added.

On another note, he announced that AgroBank is setting up a facility in the new Spaoh market. – DayakDaily
