MIRI, May 19: Gochang County (Gochang-gun) of South Korea and Miri City will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a ‘friendship city’ tomorrow (May 20).

The idea to initiate the MoU was based on the recommendation of Malaysian officials who visited the county last year for training.

“This MoU is very meaningful for us because this year is the year of the Gochang County’s World Heritage City visit year,” said its mayor, Deokseob Shim

Shim is confident that the visit to Miri will serve as a solid foundation for future collaborations and cooperation in various fields such as administration, economy, culture, tourism, and education.

“We are confident that this encounter will pave the way for robust exchanges and partnerships in these diverse areas,” he said.

The county is well-known as a prime producer of premium ingredients such as watermelons, black raspberries, sweet potatoes, melons, peanuts, eels, and clams.

Meanwhile, Miri City Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad noted the similarities between the cities could be further strengthened.

“I have received valuable information about the numerous historic sites in Gochang-gun (county), including the renowned Unesco heritage site of Gochang dolmens, fortresses, temples, and more.

“Additionally, Gochang-gun is well-known for its picturesque farms, delightful cuisine, and various attractions,” he said.

The delegation from Gochang-gun arrived in Miri today, where they were received by Ariffin representing Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

Shim and Gochang City Council chairman Jungho Lim led the 15-member delegation.

The visit, which is until May 21, is to explore more opportunities and share experiences between the two parties. — DayakDaily
