KUCHING, July 4: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has defended Miri’s new 77km real-time artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance grid, reassuring the public that its facial and license plate tracking does not breach privacy.
Speaking at the official launching ceremony of the Miri Smart City Command Center held here today, he addressed the inevitable concerns surrounding statewide data collection, emphasising that the 24-hour monitoring system is deployed strictly as a tool to enhance public safety.
“With it being for public use, it is for the public. It doesn’t mean that we breach your privacy,” he said.
He explained that whilst the system captures real-time images of passing motorcycles and automatically logs vehicle license plates, the overarching purpose is to provide a more active, secure environment for its citizens.
To maximise the efficiency of the new infrastructure, the Premier revealed that he has already suggested a new administrative feature for the command center’s operational team.
“I suggested they must have another app where they can summarise all the activities within one week,” he added.
He noted that a weekly data summary will allow the city council to constantly monitor patterns and steadily improve public service delivery across the grid.
The 77-kilometre AI surveillance matrix is part of a broader blueprint to elevate Miri as a premier tourist hub and a pioneer for sustainable development in Sarawak.
With the launch of the command center, the Premier congratulated the Miri City Council for successfully executing the ecosystem required of a “Low Carbon Smart City,” expressing confidence that the framework will eventually serve as a model to be expanded across the entire State. — DayakDaily
