Soo: Nation must move on from political turmoil and face Covid-19 pandemic head-on

KUCHING, Aug 20: Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) holds that since the dust has settled in politics, Malaysia must move on to tackle the devastation brought about by Covid-19 pandemic.

Its president Lina Soo said in terms of politics, the King has exercised his powers under 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution, and in consultation with the Conference of Rulers in handling the political disability following the resignation of former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after losing majority in Parliament.

“He (the King) has met and personally talked to each of the 114 MPs to ascertain the support was genuine and from the majority. Everything is above board and satisfies the constitutional requirements.

“What is pressing now is the Covid-19 situation, which today has reached an all time high of 23,564 cases nationwide. Our people have lost jobs and income, closed down businesses and many cannot afford three square meals, and some even are contemplating suicide.

“We must move on. We must beat Covid-19 first and bring back some semblance of normality back into our lives,” said Soo in a statement today.

For the time being, “politics can take a pause for now” where energy and resources must be focused on lifting Malaysians out of this economic fallout.

Meanwhile, on the decision of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to lend support to newly minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Soo said the ruling coalition has had the opportunity to leverage on its position to benefit Sarawak.

“But again GPS has failed the people in playing the bystander role and has come away with nothing for the people. GPS just reverted to its ‘fixed deposit’ position,” said Soo. — DayakDaily
