SMK Medamit dorm fire quickly contained thanks to swift action by security guard and teacher

KUCHING, July 2: A fire at the male dormitory of SMK Medamit in Limbang was swiftly contained last night, thanks to the prompt action of a security guard and a teacher who is also the dormitory warden.

According to a statement by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), they received an emergency call on the incident at 8.07pm, and quickly dispatched a team from the Limbang Fire Station to the location, which is approximately 43 kilometres from the station.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire was limited to one bed and a wardrobe in a dormitory room, measuring approximately 15 by 20 square feet, on the first floor of the male dormitory block.

“The fire at the initial stage was successfully extinguished by the security guard on duty with the teacher (dormitory warden) using two fire extinguishers (dry powder 9kg) and water. The estimated area burned was eight per cent,” it said.

At the time of the incident, no students or residents were inside the dormitory.

Firefighters conducted a thorough inspection to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and that there was no risk of reignition. Once the area was confirmed safe, the team returned to the station.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. – DayakDaily
