SIBU, May 7: The problem of illegal dumping is on the increase in Sibu and giving the town a bad image.

“This problem has been found to be increasing and requires the cooperation of the people of Sibu to curb it by instilling an attitude of responsibility,” said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting at the ‘Love Earth Day Ride’ here today.

He urged the public to inform the council of illegal garbage disposal activity and also appealed to Sibu residents to prioritise cleanliness in their respective areas.

“We really need public awareness for SMC to fight this problem to make Sibu clean together. If this awareness is not there, it is a big challenge for us to make the city of Sibu clean,” he said.

Due to SMC having to monitor a wide area under its jurisdiction, keeping track of illegal waste disposal is difficult to do and thus, the public’s cooperation is necessary, Ting disclosed.

Meanwhile, he urged participants at the event to not only to collect garbage but also to educate their local community about cleanliness by disposing of garbage in the right place.
