KUCHING, April 22: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting is calling upon the Sarawak government to expedite administration of the Covid-19 vaccine for Sibu councillors and enforcement personnel as they are working on the frontlines.

He said there are over 500 staff under SMC, including councillors and officers from enforcement teams, but only less than a hundred individuals have completed their vaccinations.

“The staff are working every single day. The councillors are also working without getting vaccinated. The only one vaccinated is me.

“So, I would like to call upon the government (to expedite the process). These councillors are out there every day and especially the staff in enforcement, they must be vaccinated as soon as possible,” he said during a Facebook live session with Sibu councillors here today.

Noting the insufficient supply of vaccine doses in Sarawak, he urged members of the public to protect themselves against the virus as best as possible.

He said today marks the first day Sibu Division (Sibu, Selangau, Kanowit) comes under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) with special restrictions, so everyone is advised to obey all standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“I ask of everybody in Sibu; it is time to think of your own health and don’t rely on the government for everything.

“We are doing everything we can to ask you to protect yourself, as this is the most important thing.

“In SMC, we are doing everything we can to keep all of you safe. Our staff are working hard to make sure that things in town are running smoothly,” said Ting.

In view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases on a daily basis, Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (Sibu DDMC) had on April 20 announced that Sibu, Selangau and Kanowit districts would come under a special movement restriction from April 22 to 26 in an effort to slow the rate of infection. — DayakDaily
