Shipping mechanic feared drowned after failed attempt to jump from vessel to pontoon

SIBU, April 1: A shipping mechanic fell into the river while trying to jump from a vessel to a pontoon at a wharf along Jalan Lanang yesterday.

The victim, Lim Wee Sin, 49, is feared drown. His family members are fearing for his life.


In the 4.16pm incident, a colleague of the victim saw Lim trying to get onto the pontoon from a vessel. However Lim mis-stepped and failed into the river.

Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Senior Assistant Fire Supt Suna Kaha said firemen were rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 4.23pm.

“Upon arrival at the scene, we were informed by a witness that the victim was seen trying to float. One of his friend tried to rescue him but failed,” he said.

He said search and rescue operation was carried out by the Marine Police Force following the accident.

All ships anchored at the pier were also order to be moved to other locations to facilitate the search effort.

“Search efforts has to stop at 8pm as it was dark and weather condition” he said.

According to Suna, the victim was wearing a company uniform, a blue T -shirt and dark blue trousers during the incident.
