KUCHING, Aug 26: The upcoming Shell Malaysia Upstream Headquarters at Miri Times Square is expected to be completed by August 2023.

Sarawak Shell Berhad has awarded the construction project to contractor Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd at the site today.

Witnessing the handing over of the Letter of Award for the construction and fit-out of Shell Malaysia Upstream Headquarters was Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The project also signifies the relocation of the current Shell Malaysia Upstream Headquarters from Lutong town to Miri Times Square.

Abang Johari said the return of Shell to Miri, where Shell had discovered the nation’s first oil well on Canada Hill in 1910, is proof of people’s confidence in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

He also expressed his hopes to see Shell join other companies to embark on the hydrogen production industry in the future in line with the State’s vision to add value to its gas resources rather than relying on producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) alone.

According to Shell Malaysia chairman and Upstream Malaysia senior vice president Ivan Tan, the newly leased office will fit into Shell’s energy transition plan and is reflective of its aspiration of powering progress towards a more sustainable energy future as it will have several green features, such as solar, rainwater harvesting, EV charging, and a garden within the building.

Meanwhile, ParkCity Group executive chairman Datuk Seri Yaw Chee Siew, representing Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, said the new 14-storey building would be the latest landmark green building for Miri City with sustainable features and qualification of Green Building Index’s (GBI) Gold Rating.

“The building will be designed to achieve excellent energy and water efficiency using solar panels and rainwater harvesting. With this, the energy and water usage is expected to be about 50 per cent lower than a conventional office building,” he said.

He also mentioned that the introduction of Insulated Building Skin, High-Efficiency Cooling Plant and Energy Efficient Interior Lighting would substantially reduce solar heat and conduction heat gain in the office, which will reduce the overall utility cost in the long run.

Amongst those present were Sarawak Minister of Transport-cum-Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin; Deputy Minister of Finance Malaysia Yamani Hafez Musa; Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts-cum-Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting; Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development-cum-Lambir assemblyman Dr Ripin Lamat; Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni; and Miri City Council (MCC) Mayor-cum-Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii. — DayakDaily
