Seven arrested over viral fight outside Bintulu grocery store

BINTULU, Aug 22: Police have arrested seven local men after a video showing a fight at a parking area in front of a grocery store in Bintulu went viral on social media on Friday (Aug 21).

Bintulu district police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the Criminal Investigation Division of the Bintulu District Police Headquarters (IPD) took immediate action after receiving information about the video.

“The incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding related to a vehicle accident, and initial investigations found that it had no connection to any elements of gangsterism.

“The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, and all the suspects have been remanded to assist in further investigations,” he said in a statement today.

He said investigations would be expedited for referral to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office.

“If convicted under Section 147 of the Penal Code, offenders may face imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.

“In this regard, the public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding the incident, as this could cause concern among the community and affect public order,” he stressed.

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) also urged the public to channel information related to crime to the Bintulu IPD Operations Room at 086-318804 to assist efforts to curb crime for the well-being of all parties. — DayakDaily
