Search for third missing angler stops after seven days of intensive efforts

SAR operations failed to locate Amirul after seven days.

LAWAS, Sept 16: Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for the third missing angler Mohamad Amirul Bakar was called off after seven days of intensive but unfruitful search.

The operations were called off by Lawas distict police chief DSP Roslan Leman at 5pm today.

Amirul, 26, together with Yeu Chee Tiong, 30, and Farouk Arlan Ahmad Sabri, 29, had embarked on a fishing trip to Pulau Sari on Sept 9.

They were reported missing by a friend after failing to contact them on the same evening.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call regarding the three on Monday evening before the SAR operation began.

Yeu’s body was found on Sept 10, at about 8.35am, in the vicinity of Sungai Labi-Labi.

Faruk was found on the same day, floating near Pulau Sari Besar at 11.05pm.

On Sept 11, a body was found by Marine police near Labuan waters at 6pm. However, Amirul’s family members who were called in to identify the body three times said it was not Amirul.

This has prompted the SAR operations to re-activate the search operations the next day.

Bomba also utilised their helicopter in the search. — DayakDaily
