SBC to host talk on technology triage on July 13

SBC is organising a talk on Technology Triage by Prof Philip Mendes.

KUCHING, July 9: The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) will be hosting a talk on ‘Technology Triage: How to Assess the Prospects of Commercialising A Project’ on July 13 at 3pm.

The talk will be conducted in hybrid mode with an in-person event at SBC’s IBRB seminar room and online via Zoom.

It will feature intellectual property expert Professor Philip Mendes, the director of Opteon Services Pty Limited and an Adjunct Professor of the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.

In a media release today, SBC has invited the public to join the talk to get first-hand insight from an industry expert by registering via https://www.sbc.org.my/public-talk-registration to secure a seat at SBC or watch the talk via Zoom by registering at https://bit.ly/3IfXW1x.

Through the talk, the public can discover how they could strategically decide whether a project merits commercialisation resources being invested in it and learn how to assess whether a project has excellent or poor chances of success if commercialised.

The talk will also deal with the criteria to decide how projects can be prioritised for investment or whether they should be culled.

Mendes has 25 years of experience exclusively as a technology transaction lawyer. He was engaged as a consultant to universities, government and private companies, advising on innovation policy, intellectual property policies, technology transfer practice and improving commercialisation.

He was also appointed by the Australian government to its Advisory Council for six years providing consultation on intellectual property and innovation policy.

In 2017, he travelled to Sarawak and gave a public talk entitled ‘Tech Transfer Is Not Just About Monetisation’ jointly organised with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Research Sarawak, currently known as the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development.
