KUCHING, Feb 17: Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki has been appointed the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) State Legislative Assembly (DUN) chief whip.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg made this announcement at a dinner with GPS elected representatives last night (Feb 16).

Ibrahim, a first-term Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) assemblyman, pledged to fulfill the responsibilities to the best of his abilities.

“I hope with my new position, I can instill a sense of propriety and decency in the Dewan and ensure that our august House will continue to be seen as a bastion to uphold and protect Sarawak rights.

“This is as well as exercising its functions as the highest law making body in the state as we continue to seek more restoration of Sarawak rights as per the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Inter-Government Committee Report (IGC) 1962 under the Federal Constitution,” he said in a press statement today.

Noting that DUN Sarawak, established some 155 years ago, is the oldest legislature in Malaysia and one of the oldest continuously functioning legislatures in the world, Ibrahim emphasised that it is incumbent on all members of the august House to uphold its status and maintain their decorum – to act in a manner that is parliamentary.

“I thank Datuk Patinggi (Abang Johari) for my appointment and I am humbled with the trust that the Chief Minister has put onto me with the appointment.

“I also thank other GPS component party heads – Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) for their nomination and endorsement for my appointment,” he added.

Ibrahim is also PBB deputy secretary-general as well as GPS treasurer-general. — DayakDaily
