SARIKEI, July 29: Residents of Jalan Ann Hock in Sungai Sebanyak are now benefiting from a safer and more dependable crossing following the completion of a new 36-metre concrete bridge valued at RM449,000, replacing an ageing wooden structure that had long raised safety concerns.
According to a report by TVS, the project was realised through the efforts of Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, who brought the issue to the federal government’s attention after receiving complaints from local residents.
Huang said the previous wooden bridge had deteriorated significantly over the years and was no longer suitable for public use, posing risks to those who relied on it daily.
“Upon receiving complaints from residents, I took immediate action by bringing the matter to the government to secure funding so that the old and dilapidated bridge could be replaced with a safer new facility.
“Our priority is to ensure residents have access to quality basic infrastructure, particularly bridges and roads that are used daily,” he told reporters after inspecting the completed project today.
Constructed over a three-month period, the new bridge has enhanced both accessibility and safety for residents travelling along the route.
Earlier, Huang, accompanied by officers from the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA), visited the site to inspect the completed bridge and review the implementation of the project.
He emphasised that reliable basic infrastructure plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life of residents, particularly in rural communities where roads and bridges are essential for daily activities and economic livelihoods.
“For nearly 11 years of being entrusted as a people’s representative, I have consistently worked to secure development allocations to upgrade basic amenities while ensuring that the needs of the people in the areas I represent continue to receive attention,” he said. — DayakDaily
