SARIKEI, Aug 7: The upgrading of the Nyelong By-Pass Road into a four-lane dual carriageway and the construction of the Nyelong Bypass-Kwong Ming Minah Link Road are expected to enhance road capacity, improve connectivity and strengthen the reliability of Sarikei’s road network.
The two projects form part of ongoing efforts by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak to improve transportation infrastructure in the district by providing safer, more efficient and sustainable road facilities to support growing traffic demand and future development.
In a post shared on its social media, JKR Sarawak director Datu Ir Cassidy Morris has today conducted a working visit to both projects to review their current implementation progress and ensure that construction works are carried out according to the approved schedule, specifications and required standards.
The Nyelong By-Pass Road upgrading project involves widening and upgrading an existing 3.6-kilometre stretch from the Meruton/Baji traffic light intersection to the Nyelong Industrial Area, Meranti traffic light intersection, into a four-lane dual carriageway.
Upon completion, JKR Sarawak said the upgraded road is expected to increase traffic-handling capacity, improve traffic flow and provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience for road users, particularly with increasing movement within the Sarikei area.
Meanwhile, the Nyelong Bypass-Kwong Ming Minah Link Road project involves the construction of a new approximately 2-kilometre road connecting Nyelong By-Pass Road with Kwong Ming Minah Road.
JKR Sarawak said the new link road would serve as an alternative route to strengthen the existing road network in Sarikei, improve accessibility and support the development of surrounding areas. The road will be constructed according to JKR Rural Road Type R3 standards.
The projects are also expected to help reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak periods, while providing a more consistent and dependable transportation network for residents and road users.
During the site visit, Cassidy was briefed by the project teams on the progress of works, site implementation and challenges encountered in ensuring timely completion.
He emphasised that all aspects of project execution must comply with technical specifications and prioritise construction quality to ensure the infrastructure delivered meets required standards and provides long-term benefits to the public.
He also instructed contractors to strengthen traffic management measures, improve safety arrangements at construction areas and minimise disruptions to road users throughout the construction period.
Cassidy further called for stronger site supervision and sustained work momentum to ensure both projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe.
JKR Sarawak said the implementation of the two projects reflects its continued commitment to strengthening Sarawak’s road infrastructure network through the delivery of modern, quality and sustainable facilities to support socioeconomic growth and improve public welfare. — DayakDaily
