SARIKEI, Aug 8: Sarikei has the potential to emerge as a competitive production hub and a model for modern agro-sector development driven by innovation, technology and value-added activities.
Sarikei MP Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii said the division’s potential should extend beyond agricultural production, with greater focus placed on developing it into a regional hub for downstream agro-food products.
“Sarikei has long been recognised as one of Sarawak’s key agricultural areas, with strong production capabilities in local pineapple, pepper, oil palm, paddy and other agricultural commodities that have contributed significantly to the State’s economic growth.
“We do not want to remain merely producers of raw commodities. Instead, we want to nurture more entrepreneurs who can develop downstream products, build local brands, tap into export markets and increase the income of the community,” he said when speaking at a dinner gathering with community leaders held at Sarikei Central Hall on Friday (Aug 7) night, which was broadcasted live via Ukas Channel.
The dinner was officiated by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Huang, who is also the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, expressed confidence that close collaboration between the federal government, the Sarawak government and industry players in the plantation and commodities sectors would continue to drive rural economic growth while creating more employment opportunities, particularly for the younger generation.
He said continued improvements in basic infrastructure would further support Sarikei’s economic transformation.
“Road connectivity is improving, water and electricity supply systems are being strengthened, while telecommunications and internet facilities continue to be upgraded. These developments provide the foundation for rural growth and create greater economic opportunities for both present and future generations,” he said.
Huang said the government’s continued focus and investment in Sarikei, including the RM321 million Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang and Tuanku Haji Othman Bridge projects, reflected its commitment to accelerating development in the division.
He added that such infrastructure projects would not only enhance connectivity but also serve as key catalysts for economic growth, benefiting communities and businesses across Sarikei. — DayakDaily
