PADAWAN, June 24: The Sarawak government is continuing to strengthen its utility infrastructure development agenda by taking over 79 federal water supply projects valued at RM3.47 billion, in a move aimed at accelerating implementation for the benefit of the people.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the strategic takeover is intended to close gaps in the State’s water distribution system and ensure that planned developments are delivered more efficiently and effectively.
“The takeover process is currently underway following in-principle approval from the federal cabinet,” he said during a working visit to the Puncak Borneo Acute System on Tuesday (June 23) as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Julaihi added that the decision aligns with the Sarawak government’s ongoing commitment to accelerating water supply development, supported by the State’s strong track record of completing more than 90 per cent of related projects successfully.
“The Sarawak government has approved nearly RM7 billion for the implementation of 360 water supply projects across the State.
“Hence, we want all projects, including those funded by the federal government, to be implemented more efficiently and completed effectively,” he said.
He stressed that the initiative forms part of the State’s long-term strategy to ensure continuous access to clean and treated water for all Sarawakians, including those in rural and interior areas.
On a related note, Julaihi said the Puncak Borneo Acute System, which is already operational, currently has sufficient surplus capacity that allows for expansion to surrounding areas.
Among the areas identified for potential connection to treated water supply in the near future are Kampung Sitang, Kampung Petag, and Kampung Bangau.
He also noted that proposals have been put forward to extend coverage to Kampung Sapit, a rural tourism destination that is still dependent on a gravity-fed water supply system. — DayakDaily
