KUCHING, March 6: Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has revealed that the State recorded the arrival of 57,496 tourists from various European countries in 2023.

Abdul Karim highlighted that the number of tourist arrivals was impressive, with a 121 per cent increase over the previous year.

He attributed the increase to a number of factors, including the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tischler Reisen (TR), which aims to increase Sarawak’s prominence among European travellers.

“We are confident that this continued partnership will contribute to Sarawak achieving our target of an overall 4 million visitors worldwide, in 2024,” he said during the ‘Gateway to Borneo’ campaign launch yesterday (March 5) at Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) Berlin 2024 in Berlin, Germany, according to a statement.

“With a formidable 40-year track record, Tischler Reisen is set to leverage its extensive network of 600 agencies in Germany, promoting Sarawak through diverse tour packages both offline and online.

“Through this collaborative effort, we are confident that Sarawak will ascend to greater heights as a preferred destination among Germany and neighbouring European markets.”

Meanwhile, according to a Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) press release, with the resilient 81.5 per cent recovery achievement of the Europe market’s performance in 2023, as compared to 2019, the State’s best year for European visitor arrivals, Sarawak is optimistic it will surpass 2019 levels in terms of European visitor arrivals this year. — DayakDaily
